ABOUT THE ARTIST
Desiree Crossing (b.1981) is an Australian contemporary painter, based in Perth, Western Australia. Specialising in portraiture, Desiree’s sumptuous oil paintings speak to classical painting traditions, whilst embodying an unmistakably modern spirit.
Crossing studied Fine Arts at Edith Cowan University, Central TAFE, and Set and Costume Design at Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. She has undertaken two artist residencies in Italy.
Working in finely detailed contemporary realism, her focus is on narrative portraiture. Each work gives intimate insight into the lives of the people in her paintings. Through a collaborative process that brings together the individual’s projected persona and the artist’s intent gaze and staging, her work cuts through to the essence of the subject.
Crossing utilises traditional oil painting methods alongside a dialogue with Modernist Photorealism and more contemporary ways of image making in relation to portraiture and self-portraiture. Her compositions also draw on art historical use of indicators and signs. Both this tendency to covert symbolism and the uncanny directness of the paintings, set up a feeling of flickering between the exposed and the concealed in any relationship, a hint towards the powerful connection between our character, comfort with disclosure and dynamics of personal boundaries.
Crossing exhibits regularly in Australia and abroad and her work is held within private and government collections around the world.
